Nine of Cups - Time to do the dishes

original rider waite tarot Nine of Cups
Today’s card is the Nine of Cups from the Original Rider Waite Tarot. This is also my card for 2017, so when it comes up in a daily draw it feel especially significant. This is the traditional wish card but instead of filling my mind with unfulfilled wishes, it rather filled it with doubts and questions.  At first I thought, I have everything I ever wanted and I have nothing left to wish for, so I must be utterly content with my life as it is right now but honestly that’s not entirely true. This card is all about fulfilled dreams and wishes but the man in the card doesn’t even look them. That made me wonder if for having a emotional fulfilled life it is necessary to call to mind our past dreams and achievements?  And even more, do out past dreams and wishes still still hold true for today? Or is it possible they can even be an obstruction to pursue new goals and dreams?

So many questions, so much uncertainty. As you might have expected I am a little out of sorts lately. Not knowing what I want, wish or dream of, or what to belief in anymore.  Always when I am feeling like this I tend to turn around and look at my nine cups to remember what used to make me happy and satisfied. But today I wondered, what if I would stand up, pick up my cups and do the dishes. Then I will have nine clean cups to fill up with loads of beautiful new experiences and fragrant wishes. Yes it was a nice party but now the guests are gone it and it is time to clean my house. Today is a new day with lots of possibilities to feel happy and content about.

  1. On the New Moon back on January 28th I drew the Nine of Cups and wrote nine wishes on nine slips of paper and placed them in nine "cups' - assorted glassware and cups. Each day I draw one out and think on that wish.

  2. When I look at this card I see temporary satisfaction. But yet everything is impermanent, so why shouldn't I look for something to find contentment in, even if it is just for that day?

    1. Maybe I hold on too tight to the things which used to make me happy and am expecting them do the trick once more

  3. Well, I shall join you after you've washed your dishes and make you a pot of tea. Choose a cup, fill it up, and chocolate will magically appear. Conversation will ensue, dreams talked of, laughter and tears offered up as sacrament. And after I've gotten on my flying carpet of purples and reds and flown back across the ocean we'll both be left with the fragrance of connection.

Thank you for inviting me in, my dear. xo

  4. After my dreams post the other day I had similar thoughts. Not discontented, not brimming with contentment either and not sure what wish fulfilment would lead to that. Perhaps a natural mundane state of being and as you say there is always washing up to do :)

    1. Yay for the always returning daily chores to keep our hands busy and our minds from churning.
My idea exactly: It is what it is and that's okay too.

  5. Lol, enough of sitting going over dreams of the past, get up and wash those dishes! There is also emotional satisfaction in knowing that you've done your chores. It's good to celebrate the small successes and joys, too :)

    1. My dishwasher has taken away a lot of that satisfaction, Lol

  6. I love it :) I think the 9 of Cups reputation as the "wish card" is a little overrated. Ultimately it's about emotional satisfaction, and that can look so differently for different people. There is actually great satisfaction to be found in doing the dishes (literally and figuratively!). So I suppose that each moment holds the opportunity to be fulfilling. My step-dad posted this note above the kitchen sink when I would grumble about doing the dishes as a teenager: "Doing the dishes is like bathing the baby Buddha." It gave me good food for thought, and I did eventually come to find washing the dishes quite enjoyable :)

Maybe it is time to get rid of my dishwasher and buy some dish towels :D

    2. I have the same issue - the dishwasher is so convenient! But sometimes I miss the slow, methodical process of washing by hand!
