First and Last Tag

This post is inspired by Kelly from The Truth in a Story.  After a lot of us have participated in Chloe’s tag: 3x3x3 divination, she has started her own tag about our first and last tarot and oracle deck and other divination systems which don’t involve cards. So let’s start with the last part of this tag:
Other forms of divination

runes

Sixteen years ago I’ve made my runes using ordinary pebbles. Tarot wasn’t in the picture yet. I felt I should work with runes because they were part of my ancestral heritage.  Also you have only 24 runes  and 78 tarot cards. So the decision was very easy at the time.
This is my first and my last divination set other then tarot or oracles. Although I have  become a fervent collector of card decks, I have never felt the need to try out other forms of divination beside my runes

Tarot decks
Wild Unknown Tarot Rider Waite tarot

My very first tarot deck was a pocket version of the Rider Waite Tarot, which has softer color tones than the yellow box Rider Waite. I remember taking it with me on a holiday. I tried to read and understand the guidebook but all it did was confuse me and I didn’t want to unwrap the cards because I was so afraid to pull the Death card before we traveled home. Who know what powers this deck could have…???
When we were safely at home again I bought a book from Hajo Banzhaf which opened the doors for me to more in depth tarot studies
My last Tarot deck is the Wild unknown Tarot.  Although I only have this deck for about  five weeks it has already become one of my favorites.  It amazes me each time how these pen drawings with a touch of color can evoke such deep feelings and so much meaning. I also love how well it works together with my Runes. A wonderful match between a first and a last

Oracle decks
Goddess Guidance Oracle Gaia Oracle

My first oracle deck was the Dutch version of the Goddess Guidance Oracle deck. I wanted to work with some of the depicted goddesses and needed representations on my altar.  At the time I thought I had to pick this deck very carefully because I had no intention to buy any more oracle decks. It was gifted to by M about four years ago.
My last oracle deck is the Gaia Oracle. Again the  Dutch version and again because I want to use it to explore the Divine Feminine. Lately I have been very interested in Germanic goddesses. Like Holda and Freya. I’ve discovered there is so much more to them than what you read in most  books. This is also true for Erda, Eartha, the personification of Earth (Aarde in Dutch). She is similar to Gaia, so working with this deck is a great way to relate to her and other goddesses.

I have really enjoyed this tag very much. It has brought back  a lot of memories and it was fun to see how much ideas about divination can change over the years.

  1. I love this, thank you so much for doing this! The Gaia Oracle is on my wish list for oracles so I was happy to see you endorse it! One of the reasons I pulled out my runes again to work with the Haindl tarot was a desire to tap into my Germanic heritage more. My grandfather was full German and my grandmother on the other side was full Swedish and yet I have always clung to my Irish heritage being of reddish hair, freckles, and a name like Kelly Fitzgerald lol. While I have worked with runes in the past, not systematically. I feel like Lenormand unlocked that side of my oracular heritage and I want to dig a little deeper.

    1. We seem to be on a similar path right now Kelly. I am sure you will be pleased with what the runes can teach you. This system has, like tarot, so many layers. Just like you roots. :)

  2. An interesting personal exploration Ellen. We all have our own personal connections and stories around our cards and decks. Some are stronger than others for us and it is often enlightening when we learn about each others stories behind these connections.

  3. Yea, for getting your laptop up and running again! :) What a fun post to read. I might have to do this if I have time. Did you make the bag to go with your runes? It's lovely!

    1. Almost Bev! Almost! still busy with installing 210 updates! :)
I hardly can wait to hear your stories. Yes I did make the bag myself from a piece of leather. When it is entirely opened it is circle shaped with an upright edge in which I can cast my runes

  6. I'm glad you mentioned you had joined the tag in the message you left on my blog (www.kaleidoscopetarot.blogspot.com) I enjoyed reading your first and lasts. My family tree is Scottish, Swedish, Finnish and Irish so quite a combination. I will definitely look into using my runes with my tarot cards. The tarot of the wild unknown is on my list but the postage cost is so expensive, each time I see the images I know it will be a favourite for me.

    1. It has cost me a lot too. Besides the shipping costs there was also invoice to be paid. Luckily it was a birthday present so I was willing to forget the price very quickly. :)

  7. We both started with a soft version of RWS. :) I didn't get on with Wild Unknown, it left me very cold. I like the look of that goddess oracle!

    I've done mine here: http://rowantarot.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/first-and-last-tarot-and-oracle.html

    1. Although I never use it anymore this little deck ah still a soft spot in my heart. I've been eyeing your newest Goddess deck but I am still not entirely sure about it.

  8. It's funny, I have the same RWS pocket deck like you and it was also my first. It was part of a set where a huge book of Hajo Banzhaf was added. I actually had hoped for a bigger deck and so I bought the Universal RWS and when I opend it I had to laugh, because it was also a pocket deck: there were actually two size versions of it, but they tend to forget writing on the package what version is in.

I also took my first RWS with me on holiday and started learning with the videos of the Four Queens. The Gaia Oracle is definately on m wishlist for a while now. But I will take the English edition, because there is no German version in sight. Wish you a blessed day, Lindenheart

    1. Thanks for stopping by Mosiesa. The beginning of our tarot journey is quite similar indeed. I wish Kelly Ann of the Four Queens was around when I started studying the Tarot. she is amazing!
I can definitely recommend the Gaia oracle, Most of my decks are English but I bought this one in my hometown in Holland and they carried only the Dutch version :D
