Elhaz and The Lovers – Protect what you love

Original Rider Waite Tarot The Lovers, Runes, Elhaz
The Rune for today is Elhaz (or Algiz) which means Elk. The rune stands for protection and guarding what you love and what is rightfully yours.  It is all about setting safe boundaries and deciding who or what is worth your effort to protect.
With that in mind I pulled The Lovers from the Original Rider Waite tarot and was immediately struck by the posture of the angel which is exactly the same as the Elhaz rune. The angel is the protector and guardian of The Lovers. This is a card about every form of Love you can think of. It can be about love between two people (not necessary romantic), about self love (very important) or about the love for a line of work or hobby etc. It is also a card about choice. You have to choose in who or what you will invest your love. Although Love itself is infinite, we do want to choose what we love and what it is we are willing to protect and to fight for. Yes fight for! before I became a mother, I thought I was incapable of any form of aggression. Now I know differently.
But although setting some protective boundaries is a wise thing to do, I want to open the door for new love and new opportunities because to be honest, it has been closed to for too long and it is time for some fresh air

  1. Great observation on how the angel reflects the rune! I've been watching a live cam in Savannah of a horned owl with two babies. Someone recorded her actions when crows were in her area. Your words about protective boundaries made me think of it:

  2. When this card comes up for me my first thought is always, why don't they title it as Love rather than Lovers. Lovers is so limiting, and Love is so freeing.

    1. You are absolutely right Sharyn. It took me some time to really get this card; to see beyond a exclusive romantic love and move to a more universal kind of love which is all encompassing.

  3. What a great post Ellen. Love how the two correspond, the Lovers card and the Rune.
Nothin' compares to the love of the momma bears!

  4. I was ruminating on this card last week and its relationship to the Two of Cups. Being a Major it's obviously vibrating at a higher frequency than the kind of harmony and union we see in the Minor. Some reference to Adam and Eve got me wondering about it being a depiction of the (re)union of Psyche and Soma, so necessary to our own inner completion. So that's where I'm currently parked with The Lovers.

Your pairing with the Rune and commentary are lovely.

    1. Thanks Rose and I agree with your opinion about The Lovers. For me The Lovers is also about embracing and acknowledging completely who we are and love the whole package with its beauty and imperfections. :)

  5. With your comment about the angel echoing Ehwaz in his protective stance, I notice the openness and vulnerabilty of the two people. Love makes us stronger and also weaker, as we open ourselves to pain from or for our loved ones. Another balancing act...

    1. Yes I see it too; They do have open posture. I wonder if it is the balancing act what makes life interesting and not to find a complete balance. Wouldn't it get boring??
