The Empress, our mother of abundance

Rider Waite Tarot
Yesterday I had decided that for today I would use the Rider Waite Tarot. I just wanted to go back to my tarot roots. So many different and beautiful decks are out there nowadays. It can be the theme that allures you or perhaps the artwork or when you are lucky: Both. The beauty of this variety of decks is the same time its pitfall.  Many of us buy different decks to expand their insight in the cards and to enhance their intuitive reading skills. Some of us buy more and more decks because they are on a quest for “the perfect deck”; their life companion.
And others buy them because they are just into buying more and more decks and are real collectors (hoarders???)
There’re as many reasons to buy decks as there’re people who buy them and every reason is as valid as the other.
But where does that leave our trusted  Rider Waite Tarot deck? The opinions about this one differs also lot. For me it is one of my go to decks. I've learned to read the cards with this tarot deck and it was my first “big” deck. (My very first deck was the small R.W) This deck was a unexpected present from my husband, which I found on my pillow on my birthday (years ago). I know every card by heart; the little  symbols, the colors, the feel of the stock, the faces are familiar. It’s  like catching up with an old friend, whom you haven’t seen in months. You just continue where you left off. I will never grow tired of this deck. I am very curious what your relationship with the Rider Waite Tarot is.
So The Empress for today; one of my “sigh cards”. She is all about abundance and nurturing. About feeling good about yourself and taking care of yourself. Creativity is flowing through her like the stream in her forest. You can just kneel down  and take a sip if you want. She is grounded and stable, yet fluid and caring, just like a mother should be. This card raises a very safe feeling within me
LeilaVey : “I am the Empress. I provide sustenance for all children of the earth, and love them equally. I am the giver and preserver of life. I offer beauty, passion, sensuality and pleasure to all who connect with me. I am the ever nurturing mother, ever pregnant with new life and new possibilities. Take what you need. There is plenty for all.”

  1. The RWS is my "comfort" deck that I learned from too. As you said, it is like having coffee with an old friend when I pull it out. I've seen lots of beautiful decks that had no meat to them, and though the artwork of the RWS might not be the fairest of them all, it has enough symbology to last me a lifetime.

    1. I just knew it! I am not surprised at all. It's nice we have this old friend in common too :D

  2. I read with the Universal Rider-Waite-Smith deck as one of two primary decks that I use. Surprisingly it was not my first deck, but its such a classic and has so much history that I feel quite connected with it and feel like it connects me to the lineage of readers who used it before me (metaphorically speaking, I don't have a super old deck or anything. :) ).

    1. I have the Universal Waite too. It's coloring is a bit softer. Yes it is good to realize how many people have done readings with this deck. Sometimes I find my self using this deck as a mental reference when I read with other decks :)

  3. I love the symbolism of the RWS, but my first deck, and my preferred version, is the Radiant Rider Waite. I just love the bright, happy colours :) Still, I'm one who collects decks, and loves using different decks. I blame being a double Gemini. I have no belief I will ever find "the one" deck, I just love lots ;)

    1. I've never seen the Radiant Rider Waite in real life. But I suspect it's a bit to bright of my taste. I love collecting decks too, but since I have bought the Wildwood Tarot and the Faeries oracle my desire for a new deck has settled down and it feels so peaceful :D I am curious how long this feeling will last

    2. I like the Radiant version because it was the only one I could trim borders and titles from - the others have different sizes for major and minor cards, making a trim impossible.

    3. I've looked at some pictures online and I can imagine, it must be beautiful when you lay out a spread with your trimmed deck :)

  4. I love the RW. I like the one called 'the original' with the sage green backgrounds and blue and white backs. I think the artwork is beautiful.

Modern decks are all well and good but many feel like a distant echo of the RW in many ways. It's like something is missing - probably why many have disappointed me. They're like the shell without the substance inside.

I'm another who adores the Radiant. My favourite variant too. Beautifully rich in colours.

    1. The "original" I will buy someday for sure. I prefer that one over the Radiant. Yes most decks are clones and echo's. Some do have an original twist but it is mostly the artwork I am drawn too. For instance the Druidcraft has quite a lot RW like pictures but the artwork is amazing
